PONNIE Y. MADDUX, ESQ.
I started my litigation career right out of law school as a defense attorney for the New York City Law Department. Under the leadership of the Mayor and the Corporation Counsel, I defended the City of New York in the various actions brought against it. From the beginning, my dedication, passion, and natural abilities in agressively defending my clients was apparant. I took pride in my knowledge and preparation and made sure I was always ahead of and better prepared than my adversaries. With added years of experience I continued to expand on my knowledge in the law and become an expert in the field of defending a client’s rights and providing for their best interests. Before long, I was promoted to supervise and oversee a team of attorneys and paralegals. In addition to their initial training, I would meet with the team weekly to discuss case strategies, resolve issues and brainstorm tactical litigation plans.
In my role, I also defended and deposed witnesses at over 100 depositions and appeared on behalf of my client in countless Civil and Supreme Court hearings and conferences. In addition, I made more than 50 motions for summary judgment, which resulted in the dismissal of the majority of those cases, saving the City of New York millions in tax payer dollars. Eventually, I was promoted to Senior Counsel and was put in charge of the deposition program at the Manhattan office. I trained all entering attorneys in the skills and processes of taking and defending depositions. I also oversaw the pro-bono deposition program and provided deposition training and supervision for associates from firms such as Patterson Belknap, Cleary Gottlieb, Debevoise and Plimpton, and several other NYC firms.
I have also successfully defended my client in Supreme Court jury trial. I have participated in several jury selection processes and have worked with adversaries, mediators and judges to obtain the best results for the client, whether that be settlement or defense verdict. In trial, I enthusiastically advocate for my client and make sure the evidence is presented in a way to establish their position.
In addition to my civil litigation experience, I have experience representing minors facing deportation in Immigration proceedings. In this field, I used the same passion, preparation and skill to effectively represent the minor, with case law and compelling facts to persuade the Judge to provide a judgment that is in the best interest of the minor, which is often asylum relief. I also have experience with assisting clients in child support modification motions in family court matters.
